「Halloween Greetings」

a vintage Halloween card, postcard, poster or framed print that looks like something found in grandma's attic. GRAPHIC LANGUAGE: the layout of 1930s-1950s paper Halloween decorations and postcards - grinning jack-o-lanterns, arched black cats, smiling crescent-moon faces, owls on branches, witches on broomsticks, bats and autumn leaves, drawn as flat printed shapes with simple dark outlines, often framed by an arch, a scalloped label or a ribbon banner that holds the words. LIGHT: flat printed light, shading made only with flat colour shapes and halftone dots; the oil-painting tier uses dim moonlight and a faint candle glow. COLOUR: a limited print palette of pumpkin orange, black and cream, with olive green or old red in only one or two places; never neon. TEXTURE: aged yellowed card, coarse halftone dots, slightly misregistered colour plates, soft creases and worn corners; in the oil-painting tier, cracked oil paint, yellowed varnish and a chipped gilt frame. TIERS: the printed-decoration tier is a 1950s die-cut decoration, party invitation, poster or greeting postcard; the antique oil-painting tier is an old landscape painting of a moonlit farm or field with a friendly sheet ghost painted in, in a worn gilt frame. LETTERFORM COLOR PRIORITY: if the selected font defines its own letterform colour or material, that takes absolute priority; the print palette colours the letters only when the font does not specify. ATMOSPHERE: the old decoration motifs, the limited palette and the aged paper or old canvas always appear around the words regardless of letterform colour. When no specific material is defined by the font: default lighting - the words sit on aged cream card under flat printed light in orange and black. A vintage Halloween greeting postcard: 'Halloween Greetings' on a banner across the upper middle, a grinning jack-o-lantern, an arched black cat and a witch on a broomstick across a crescent moon around it, aged paper edges.
