Each style on this page pulls from a different Unicode block, and not every device has fonts that cover every block. Here is what actually causes the boxes (also called "tofu"):
Gothic / Bold Gothic — these use the Mathematical Fraktur block (U+1D504–U+1D56B). Most modern desktop OSes render them fine, but some stripped-down Android system fonts and older game clients skip this block entirely, showing □ for each letter.
Double-struck (Outline) — drawn from the Mathematical Double-Struck block (U+1D538–U+1D56B). Coverage is similar to Fraktur: good on iOS, macOS, and Windows 10+, but patchy on budget Android devices.
Black Squared and Black Bubble — these are the riskiest styles on this page. Squared letters sit in the Enclosed Alphanumerics and CJK Compatibility blocks; Black Bubble uses filled variants even further outside the Basic Multilingual Plane coverage of many default fonts. If a platform or device does not ship a wide-coverage emoji/symbol font (like Noto or Segoe UI Symbol), these render as boxes for the viewer even if they looked fine on your screen.
Bold, Small Caps, Fullwidth (Fullwidth), and Backwards — Bold and Small Caps use Mathematical Bold or standard Latin Extended blocks with broad OS support, earning a "high" or "medium" compatibility rating. Fullwidth letters are standard Unicode block-width Latin characters (U+FF01–U+FF5E), well-supported everywhere. Backwards uses standard reversed Latin lookalikes with high compatibility.
How the high-compatibility filter helps: enabling it hides the "risky" styles (Black Squared, Black Bubble, Bold Strike, Upside Down) so you only see styles rated medium or high — the ones that will render as actual letters for the vast majority of your audience across iOS, Android, and desktop.
