How to Use This Tool

Why Do Some Fonts Show as Boxes?
Old English / blackletter styles on this tool use characters from the Unicode Mathematical Fraktur block (e.g., U+1D504–U+1D56B) and related Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols — a block added to Unicode primarily for mathematical typesetting, not everyday text. Because of that origin, these code points are only included in fonts that explicitly cover the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols range. On newer iPhones and Android devices running recent OS versions, system fonts (like Apple's built-in fallback chain or Google's Noto fonts) do cover most of this block, so Gothic and Bold Gothic render cleanly. On older Android devices (pre-2019), budget phones with stripped-down system fonts, or some gaming consoles and smart TVs, these code points fall outside the installed font coverage and display as empty boxes (called "tofu"). The "Gothic Frame," "Black Bubble," and "Squared" variants are marked "risky" because they combine Mathematical Fraktur characters with additional Unicode decoration blocks that have even thinner device support. If rendering everywhere matters — for example, a game username that opponents and teammates will see on their screens — choose the Bold variant (rated "high" compatibility), which uses characters from the Mathematical Bold block that are far more widely supported. Gothic and Bold Gothic are rated "medium," meaning they work on most modern devices but may still fail on a notable minority of older hardware.

Old English vs Gothic — What's the Difference?
Both are blackletter, the heavy medieval script, with a subtle split:
Old English / Textura is the upright, dense manuscript hand — tight vertical strokes, the look you see on diplomas, tattoos, and newspaper mastheads.
Gothic / Fraktur is the more angular, decorative branch from old German print.
Copy-paste reality: Unicode ships essentially one blackletter alphabet — Fraktur (𝔄𝔅𝔢) and a bold version — so the Old English and Gothic tools share the same underlying characters. Choose by name/intent; the visible output is nearly the same.
