Because in extreme metal the logo's job is not fast reading — it is signalling. A spiked, tangled, barely-decipherable logo communicates intensity, darkness and menace before you work out a single letter, and that atmosphere is the point: the shape has to feel as brutal as the music. It also acts as a badge of belonging. A logo you have to decode filters for committed fans — knowing whose name that thicket of spikes spells is a mark of being inside the scene — while a clean, instantly readable logo would read as too commercial, too safe, for the genre. So legibility is deliberately traded away for mood and identity. The more brutal subgenres push this furthest, which is why death and black metal logos are often almost impossible to read, and reading them easily is not the goal.
