Retro Pop is the visual language of a specific moment of cultural confidence: the postwar decades in America and Western Europe, when industrial production, television advertising, and a rapidly expanding middle class created a visual culture of unprecedented brightness and energy. This was not folk art or fine art — it was the aesthetic of the commercial mainstream at its most exuberant.

The design references converge from several directions: the mid-century Modern furniture and graphic design of the 1950s (Charles and Ray Eames, Saul Bass, Paul Rand); the candy-colored product advertising of the early 1960s; the diner culture of chrome stools and jukebox light; the specific red-and-white palette of Coca-Cola's mid-century advertising campaigns, which effectively colonized an entire color combination.

What defines the aesthetic is its relationship with technology: the optimism was total. Cars had tail fins because fins were futuristic; kitchen appliances came in pastels because color was progress; the space race provided a vocabulary of rockets and orbits that filtered into everything from cereal boxes to motel signs. The future was being built, it was going to be better, and it was going to look exactly like this.

The tail fin on American cars peaked on the 1959 Cadillac models. The first fins had appeared on the 1948 Cadillac, a Frank Hershey design approved by GM styling chief Harley Earl, who took inspiration from the twin-tail Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter aircraft. The fins were pure visual optimism about the future of transportation. Source ↗

Coca-Cola's 1931 commission of illustrator Haddon Sundblom to paint Santa Claus holding a Coke bottle established the modern visual image of Santa — red suit, white beard, jolly demeanor — so thoroughly that many people believe the company invented it. They didn't invent it, but Sundblom kept painting Coca-Cola's Santa for 33 years until the image became inseparable from the season. Source ↗
