A Japanese irezumi tattoo design for a thigh, drawn as a flat hand-inked woodblock-style graphic on a plain light cream washi paper ground, with no scene, no shadows and no photorealism. The motif is one large hannya mask, a tall vertical composition that follows the length of a thigh. The mask sits in the upper-middle and fills about 45% of the canvas height. It has two curved horns, a wrinkled brow, deep-set round eyes with heavy lids, a wide grinning mouth showing blunt fangs, and long strands of hair flowing down on both sides. The mask is filled with vermilion red, with a few cream highlight areas left bare. The horns, teeth and eye rims are solid black. Every contour is a bold, even black outline, thick enough to survive as a tattoo. Two large open peonies, one at the lower left and one at the upper right, tuck against the mask. Each has layered, curling petals with clear cream gaps between them. They are outlined in black, with some petals filled red and others left cream with black linework.
