Neon light as a medium made its public debut in December 1910, when French engineer Georges Claude demonstrated neon tube lighting at the Paris Motor Show. The tubes were initially a novelty, but by the 1920s the technology had crossed the Atlantic — Earle Anthony purchased two neon signs for his Los Angeles Packard dealership in 1923, for $1,250 apiece. The signs literally stopped traffic.

The technology spread through the 20th century as the visual language of commercial culture: Las Vegas, Times Square, Tokyo's Shinjuku ward, Hong Kong's Mong Kok district. Each city developed its own neon dialect — American neon was brash and singular, Japanese neon was dense and layered.

Electric Neon as a design aesthetic is not specifically referencing any of these cities — it is referencing the sensation of all of them. The single vivid color, the soft bloom and warmth, the slight flicker that suggests an actual gas tube rather than an LED approximation.

Electric Neon is the most romantic sub-style in the Cyberpunk family. It carries the visual memory of every late-night bar sign, every rain-reflected storefront, every city street that looks better at 2am than at noon.

The aesthetic works for nightlife, bar and restaurant branding, music events, anything that needs to feel like it lives after dark. It also has a specific retro quality — real neon tube signs have been largely replaced by LED approximations, so actual neon now reads as vintage, craft, and deliberately chosen.

Compared to other cyberpunk sub-styles, Electric Neon is less aggressive and more atmospheric. It does not demand attention — it invites it.
