Dry brush technique in Western painting is a way to create texture and suggest rough surfaces. Winslow Homer used it in watercolors such as Eastern Point Light (1880), dragging a relatively dry brush so the pigment caught on the paper's rough weave. The specific application to typography and lettering came through commercial sign painting — the trade of hand-lettered signs that dominated street-level commercial communication before digital printing.

Professional sign painters used dry brush deliberately for certain effects: a brush loaded with thick paint and then mostly wiped dry would skip across rough surfaces, leaving broken coverage that simulated age, texture, and weathered paint. This was not a failure to paint cleanly — it was a technique for communicating that something had existed in the world long enough to show wear.

The aesthetic migrated from sign painting into graphic design and then into digital typography as the grunge aesthetic of the early 1990s (Emigre magazine, David Carson, Ray Gun) deliberately embraced imperfection as a design value. The raw, unfinished, physically textured quality became its own visual language for authenticity and anti-corporate positioning.
