Chinese ink brush calligraphy — 书法 (shūfǎ) — is one of the oldest continuous artistic traditions in the world, practiced for over 3,000 years. The fundamental materials have barely changed: ink, mò (a suspension of carbon black in water and glue binder), a brush made from animal hair with a pointed tip, and paper or silk as the writing surface.

The specific visual qualities that define Chinese ink brush writing come from the physics of the loaded brush. A fully loaded brush (máobǐ) holds a reservoir of ink that depletes through the stroke — producing the characteristic thick-to-thin variation where strokes begin rich black and end grey. The rice paper surface absorbs ink rapidly and cannot be corrected, which is why Chinese calligraphy developed a philosophy of the irreversible confident stroke: 一气呵成 (yī qì hē chéng), complete in one breath.

No original work by the 4th-century master Wang Xizhi survives — the Lantingji Xu of 353, celebrated as the high point of running script, is known only through copies traced in the Tang dynasty and later rubbings. Source ↗

Chinese calligraphy recognizes five major script types — seal, clerical, regular, running and cursive — which had all taken shape by the Tang dynasty (618-907), and nearly every calligrapher begins by copying models of regular script. Source ↗
