Science fiction cinema typography split into two major schools after 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). Stanley Kubrick set the title card in clean sans-serif Gill Sans — the idea being that the future is rational, cold, and precise. Organic or decorative type would imply emotion, and the future Kubrick imagined had moved past emotion into pure function.

The cold brushed metal aesthetic in sci-fi typography descends directly from this Kubrickian tradition. Apple's titanium PowerBook G4 of 2001 carried the same values: precision manufacturing, no excess, designed by engineers rather than decorators.

The internal illumination element — type that glows from within — comes from a different source: the computer interface displays in films like TRON (1982) and Alien (1979), where glowing text on dark screens represented digital information. Glowing type came to mean: this information is electronic, and electronics are the future.
