Horror title design has its own distinct lineage from the rest of cinema typography. One touchstone is The Shining (1980) — rolling credits in hot-blue Helvetica over aerial wilderness footage, building dread through space and pace rather than visual aggression.

But the physical decay aesthetic — cracked surfaces, blood textures, corroded metal — comes primarily from the slasher era of 1978–1984: Halloween, Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street. These titles needed to signal danger before the film started. The solution was material: use surfaces that are already damaged, already contaminated, already threatening.

Cold underlighting — lighting from below — is the specific cinematographic convention for horror. Human faces lit from below look wrong because sunlight and interior light sources usually come from above. The wrongness registers before conscious thought.

The letter-spaced, broken type of Alien's 1979 titles — a disjointed Helvetica-style sans that slowly assembles on screen — showed horror and sci-fi could unsettle through spacing alone, before any image appears. Source ↗
